I have Social Disease. I have to go out every night. If I stay home one night, I start spreading rumours to my dogs. ~Andy Warhol
Jess is one of those remarkable all-round talents that began her career not in painting for others, but as an artist trained in fine arts. She loves to create pseudo impressionistic "pop" art, and many may not even know that about her.
Behold...
JB (Jess) is a remarkable talent. She started off creating her own art, but also painting at apartment buildings - and she didn't love it. She worked under some bad bosses and she was treated like shit. Often getting shorted in pay. She was doing interior/exterior painting as an employee but she was also working on fine art, murals and refinishing furniture.
When JB's son was about 3 years old, she and her husband, Luke, filed for a business license to go out on their own. It was about that time that JB and Luke learned that their son Archie is Autistic. The idea that they could run their own business and tend to their son's needs was written in the stars. SDA (Social Disease Art) Painting and Specialties was formed.
I have personally watched JB's interactions with her son, and when I say that she's nothing short of a spectacular mother, I mean it. Her attention to her family is only paralleled by her attention to her business. That's saying something.
Recently, JB hired me to photograph two businesses in Hamilton. One being a hair salon that kept its vintage structure and bones intact, and the other being an all-under-one-roof house of beauty that specializes in cosmetic injections and more.
Let's talk about Smash Hair. As an interior designer myself, I love seeing fresh new ideas used by businesses. At Smash, the vintage bones were kept intact, and a fun new face was applied. JB meticulously revamped the entire space, and absolutely KILLED it when she created the custom pink epoxy countertop. Good Lawd.
Haven House of Beauty was similar. The designer in me was in love with how the natural woodwork on the banister and some old-school details were preserved. So clean, fresh and calm feeling. JB did a beautiful job on the overhaul of Haven. It couldn't be more lovely.
I loved hanging out with JB and visiting these locations. It's so much fun for me to do what I love as a career. I know JB will tell you the same.
Thanks for stopping by.
